Dr. Ben Carson - From Tough, Urban Beginnings to World Renowned Surgeon
The son of a single mother growing up in a tough, inner-city, Detroit neighborhood, Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Challenges such as dire poverty, a single parent home, poor grades, and low self-esteem, appeared to preclude the realization of that dream. Yet his mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. Young Ben persevered and became a full professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for over a quarter of a century.
“Success is determined not by whether or not you face obstacles, but by your reaction to them. And if you look at these obstacles as a containing fence, they become your excuse for failure. If you look at them as a hurdle, each one strengthens you for the next.”
Dr. Carson will be featured at Ohio Christian University's 2014 Leadership Forum on April 21, 2014.
