Fourth Annual Small Business Round Table
Ohio Christian University’s School of Business & Government hosted its fourth annual Small Business Round Table on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. The Round Table brought together over one hundred OCU students and seven business people, most of whom are small business owners. The topic for this year’s event was Starting and Managing a Small Business, and special guests included:
Jesse Lear and Travis Smith - V.I.P Waste Services, LCC.
Justin Wood - Captain Steamer carpet cleaning
Jon Bialy - Bialy Corp.
Ben Reynolds – Regional business banking officer, The Citizen’s Bank
Carly Neff – General Manager, Rhoads Farm Market
Mike Farrel – Mike’s Landscaping (Graduate of Ohio Christian University)
During the event, students were able to engage in discussion with the various business people, and ask practical and applicable questions. The business owners emphasized character, ethics, hard work, time management, knowledge of your market, and discipline as important aspects of owning your own business. This event is particularly helpful and informative for students who are currently working on business plans to be submited to OCU’s third biannual ten thousand dollar Business Plan Competition, held this spring.
The School of Business & Government’s strong emphasis on practical learning is the impetus for events like the Round Table, bringing knowledgeable and successful individuals to campus so OCU students can draw from their experiential expertise.
Most of the students who attended the event are majoring in Business, Government Relations, Sport Management, Disaster Management, and Criminal Justice. Some have indicated their own plans to start a small business upon graduating.
