OCU to Host War on Drugs Conference - April 4-5

OCU will host the “Saving Lives: Educating the Community to Battle Rural Drug Usage” conference April 4-5 in the Maxwell Center located on the Circleville campus.

The University’s Government & Public Service program and Psychology Department are collaborating on the effort to bring “practitioner” speakers in to educate and inspire parents, clergy, law enforcement, counselors and those who work in the rehab field. The goal is to educate attendees on how to help drug addicts, and therefore, improve the quality of life and safety of neighborhoods and communities.

Dr. Monty Lobb, director of the OCU Government & Public Service program, commented on the conference speakers, “We are fortunate to have Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy and the Ohio Director of Mental Health & Addiction Services, Orman Hall share their knowledge and experiences. Our attendees will benefit from their insightful perspectives on how to tackle the various dimensions of this critical issue.“

“Part of our mission at the University is to strengthen and encourage our communities through collaborative efforts like this. The conference is a concrete way we can serve and play a role in the health of our neighborhoods, villages and cities.”

Dr. Jim Smith, director of the OCU Substance Abuse Counseling program, noted, “Substance abuse is found at all levels of society. There is no drug-free zone or safe place. As a result, communities need to draw from all possible resources to address the problems because lives are at stake.”

The conference will feature three tracks geared toward counselors and professionals, clergy and parents and law enforcement and the community at large. Each track will feature three breakout sessions over the day and a half conference with keynote speakers during the Friday dinner and Saturday lunch. The conference will conclude with a community forum on best practices at the grassroots level.
