Anti-Virus and Network Connection Policy

  1. Any student wishing to connect a personal computer running Microsoft Windows to the network must have a machine that is free of viruses and has the most recent Microsoft security patches applied. Follow this procedure:
    • Go to http://update.microsoft.com and scan for critical updates and install them.
    • The user must have recently updated anti-virus software. If no anti-virus software is loaded the user will not be able to connect to the network. The Department of Technology recommends AVG or AVIRA.
  2. If a student's network connection is disabled due to the machine being infected, there will be a $25 fee for IT Technicians to clean the machine and re-enable the connection. The connection will be re-enabled after the fee is paid at the Business Office. Bring the receipt to the Network Office in Maxwell Library.
  3. Only hubs or switches will be allowed for students living on campus who want additional network connections in the dorm room. This equipment is available at local computer retailers. Routers, wired or wireless, are not allowed. If a student's network connection is disabled due to a misconfigured router, the connection will remain disabled until the use of the router is discontinued and a $25 reconnection fee is paid at the Business Office. Bring the receipt to the Network Office in Maxwell Library.
  4. Floppy disks are not recommended for use in the labs or classrooms. The preferred method of storage should be a CD or USB Flash/Thumb Drive. If data problems arise with floppy disks we will not troubleshoot the problems.
