Network Administrator

The Network Administrator will be responsible for overseeing Ohio Christian University's (OCU) network and server infrastructure. This individual's primary responsibility will be to assure that systems are operational 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This individual must be willing and able to be on call 24x7. The key components of the OCU network include a fiber backbone, Avaya layer 3 switch, SonicWall firewall, and iPrism content filtering appliance. In terms of the server infrastructure OCU utilizes VMware to host all mission critical services. The VMware Cluster hosts both Novell and Microsoft servers.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform all network administrative tasks as assigned
  • Manage the following servers and services
  • VMware vSphere and vCenter 4.0
  • Suse Linux Enterprise
  • Novell Open Enterprise Server, GroupWise Server, iPrint, and Net Storage
  • Windows Server 2003 and 2008
  • SQL Server 2000, 2005, and 2008
  • Microsoft Exchange 2007
  • Internet Information Services
  • Other applications associated with higher education
  • Manage GroupWise and Exchange email servers
  • Manage the network infrastructure, including fiber connections, firewalls, network switches, routers, hubs, wireless access points and controllers, and proxy servers
  • Manage ShoreTel VoIP infrastructure, including switches and the voice-mail server
  • Manage iPrism content filtering appliance
  • ESupport all facets of Active Directory including GPOs, user objects, groups, OUs, etc
  • Design and manage a geographically dispersed network and directory structure
  • Work with vendors to facilitate problem resolution
  • Maintain system backups and perform regular testing to verify that backups are current and reliable
  • Maintain server room organization, wiring/patch cable labeling and consistency, hub and switch port configuration and management, network asset and software license inventory and tracking, and documentation management
  • Configure, install, maintain, and upgrade hardware and software such as, servers, switches, network security devices, cabling, and server operating systems
  • Assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to network hardware and software acquisition, installation and implementation, use, support, security, and backup
  • Provide "third tier" assistance to Help Desk staff and campus IT personnel to complete and/​or resolve any network activity or problem
  • Assist the Help Desk and campus IT personnel as needed with the creation and maintenance of network users, email accounts, user environments, and security settings
  • Assist with the install and testing of system software upgrades
  • Assist with the development, implementation, testing, and maintenance of disaster recovery procedures
  • Information Technology by maintaining documentation for all current projects and tasks within the Help Desk software
  • Provide coverage for others within the department as required

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or related technical discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of experience maintaining network and server infrastructures
  • Documented experience implementing and maintaining a VMware virtualized environments and Microsoft Windows environments
  • Ability to install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Microsoft and Linux environments, including proficiency in configuring, installing, fine-tuning Microsoft SQL Server
  • Familiarity with virtual LANs, SNMP, SMTP, IMAP, SOAP, NFS, iSCSI, CiFS and other network or communications protocols
  • Documented experience with Linux operating systems and Novel services
  • Documented experience with network services and management technologies (packet shaping, DHCP, DNS, etc)
  • Familiarity with server hardware such as RAID configuration and management
  • Experience managing a TCP/IP networks supporting VoIP telephony and personal computers
  • Experience managing Microsoft Active Directory and eDirectory implementations
  • Experience with defining, designing, and executing complex projects
  • The ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to take a holistic view of organizational systems

  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer relations skills, good organizational and project management skills; sound judgment; analytical; initiative; flexibility; detail-oriented
  • A commitment to the development and implementation of proactive/​preventative measures
  • An understanding of the importance of knowing and following organizational systems and procedures
  • Excellent knowledge of all Microsoft Desktop products, and the associated skill set to administer this environment with a MCSA certification a plus
