OCU Baseball Opens Season With Sweep of Cincinnati Christian
The Ohio Christian Baseball Squad opened the 2011 season with a doubleheader sweep of Cincinnati Christian Thursday evening in Chillicothe. The Blazers edged Cincinnati 5 to 4 in the opener and then completed the day with a 7 to 2 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, Michael Blevins picked up the win and struck out 7 on the mound while newcomer Logan Creech came in and recorded the save by getting the final two outs. Offensively, Blevins and Stefan Vasiloff led the way with 3 hits each. The Blazers banged out 12 hits total with Kelton Sines and Max Ray adding two hits each. Blevins, Vasiloff, and Sines drove in the OCU runs.
In the second contest, Brandon Metzgar picked up a win in his first college start. The Springfield product struck out 8, and Creech again picked up a save in relief.
Again the bats were pretty hot with 11 hits on the board for OCU. It was Blevins and Vasiloff again leading the hit parade. Vasiloff added 3 more hits to give him 6 knocks including 2 doubles for the day. Blevins added 2 hits and two runs batted in. Ryan Black, Ron Goodwin, Max Ray, Metzgar, Sines, Preston Vest all added a base hit in the second game.
Coach Brian Bigam was pleased with the effort, especially with the pitchers only giving up 5 earned runs in 2 games in their first start on a cold afternoon and evening. OCU travels to national runner up Toccoa Falls for two games Monday and a single game Tuesday at Johnson Bible College.
