Trailblazers Make History by Beating Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon, Ohio (11-16-2010). The Ohio Christian University men's basketball team traveled to the campus of Mount Vernon seeking their first victory against the Cougars. The Trailblazers, anchored by a stellar shooting performance came out victorious in a 94-83 upset of the Cougars in their Physical Education Center. This marks the first win in Trailblazer history against Mount Vernon.

The first half was characterized by consistent lead changes and at halftime the score was knotted at 38-38. Despite being outrebounded by thirteen boards, the Trailblazers stood tough on defense keeping them close throughout the first half.

The second half looked much the same with the Cougars abusing the Trailblazers on the boards.  Although they have struggled with rebounding they certainly have not lacked in offensive production. The Blazers came out hot in the second half shooting 60% from the floor and 100% from behind the arc. They were in complete control throughout the second half, sporting a commanding 18 point lead at one point. The Blazers ended the game with five players in double figures. This offensive parade was led by Tirrell Cumberland, Deshawn Knighten, and Brandon Byars. Cumberland was on fire in the second half ending with 17 points, 14 of them coming in the second half, Knighten played his best offensive game of the year scoring 19 with 5 assists and 5 steals, and Brandon Byars played an all around consistent game pumping in 20 points and grabbing 8 boards. Tim Baker and Mike Farrell also played solid games offensively scoring 12 and 14 points respectively. Jeremy Hays once again came through in crunch time recording a team high 3 blocks, one of which ended an 8 point Mount Vernon run towards the end of the second half.

The Trailblazers are now 5-2 on the season and play this Saturday, November 20, 2010 at home against Southern State Community College at 3:00pm.
