OCU Music Department hosted Third Annual Pre-Contest Band Clinic

The Music Department hosted its third annual Pre-Contest Band Clinic this spring.  The purpose of the clinic is to support local band programs by providing an opportunity for high school bands to perform their contest selections for a panel of outstanding band clinicians and applied music faculty. The bands receive recorded comments and a 50-60 minute masterclass with the clinicians. The main clinicians are Mr. George Edge (OCU conducting and instrumental music instructor, Upper Arlington Director of Bands, and retired Director of Bands at Grove City High School) and Dr. Jeff Shellhammer (retired band director of the Gahanna Lincoln High School Band and guest lecturer and student teaching supervisor at The Ohio State University).  During the clinic, the clinicians listened to each band perform their contest selections and then provided them with tips and strategies on how to improve. This year around 200 students participated in the clinic. Below are some of the participating band director’s responses to the clinic:

I believe the clinic was a huge success!  I think the format was very useful to my students and me.  Mr. Shellhammer and Mr. Edge were very approachable and worked well with the students.  Having applied faculty members sit with the group was very beneficial to allow students to hear a mature musical sound. Please continue the event!  Overall a great experience for all! - Russ Hawvermale, director of the Adena High School Band

My students had a great time and I know it will be very beneficial with our upcoming preparations.  I look forward to bringing both of my groups in the future! - Ben Factor, director of the Lancaster High School Band
