OCU President Named Chair of ABHE Board
The president of Ohio Christian University, Dr. Mark Smith, was elected to chair the board of the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE). He assumes the position from outgoing chair, Dr. James Eckman, President of Grace University in Omaha, Nebraska.
Smith commented, “Biblical higher education has been the leader in education from its early beginnings at Harvard and Yale; however, ABHE must work with colleges and universities to introduce new strategies and delivery methods to engage the twenty-first century leader!” Smith added, “My greatest reason for accepting the chair is to answer this question: How do ABHE institutions educate the church and society effectively and with excellence and create a venue for the renewal of biblical values in our world?”
Dr. Ralph Enlow, ABHE president, said, “I'm thrilled and grateful that the ABHE board of directors has elected Dr. Mark Smith, as its chair. Dr. Smith's already deep engagement with and wise encouragement of the work of biblical higher education will be enhanced through this vital leadership role.”
Established in 1947, ABHE is a nationally recognized accrediting agency. It is made of more than 150 postsecondary institutions in the US and Canada specializing in biblical ministry formation and professional leadership education. To achieve or retain accreditation from ABHE, a school must demonstrate that it is accomplishing its mission and goals through a comprehensive system of assessment and planning. ABHE is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
OCU has been an accredited member of ABHE since 1976. OCU is also accredited by the North Central Association’s Higher Learning Commission and the Ohio Board of Regents. Its teacher education programs are also accredited by the Teacher Education Accrediting Council.
