Ohio Christian University (OCU) President Mark A. Smith spoke at the second annual Faith and Freedom Conference and Strategy Briefing in Washington, D.C., June 3rd and 4th. As a conference speaker and vice chair of the Faith and Freedom Coalition for Ohio, Smith interacted with nine potential presidential candidates and other speakers, such as Speaker of the House John Boehner. Additionally, Smith spent 30 minutes with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (Minnesota), former Secretary of Education Bill Bennett, and entrepreneur Donald Trump. Smith discussed faith and education issues with Trump, and when invited to Circleville, Trump responded positively.
In his presentation, Smith called listeners to lead the cause for family values, to lead the fight against over-regulation, and to lead the investment in Christian colleges and universities. (See the video of Dr. Smith's remarks, beginning at 14:45 minutes.)
This year's conference theme was "Restoring America's Greatness and Founding Principles." More than 1,500 people attended this conference, which was nationally televised. The Faith and Freedom Coalition (www.FFCoalition.com) was founded by Dr. Ralph Reed who was senior advisor to the Bush-Cheney 2000 and 2004 campaigns. This organization embraces such principles as the sanctity and dignity of life, family, and marriage, and education reform that puts children first.
OCU will host its second Faith and Freedom Rally in fall, date to be determined. Invited speakers are Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and former Secretary of Education Bill Bennett. Last October OCU hosted its first such rally with Governor Mike Huckabee, Dr. Ralph Reed, and Dr. Ken Blackwell. About these rallies, President Smith said, "Everyone in the community should attend these events. These are wonderful speakers, and although everyone may not agree with their views, they stand for and promote love of God and love of country."
