All-District 6'9" Center Devyn Benson Joins Blazers

MANSFIELD, OH - Mansfield Senior High School basketball standout Devyn Benson signed a letter of intent Thursday to play basketball at Ohio Christian University.  Benson was a member of the 2010 Mansfield Senior team that went 21-2 on their way to a District Championship and District Runner-Up finish.

At 6'9" Benson was a force in the middle for the Tygers.  As a senior he was named 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-District VI, while also receiving All-Northwest Ohio honors.  Benson solidified himself as one of the top big men in Ohio, racking up double-doubles on a regular basis.

“We started recruiting Devyn last year,” said Recruiting Coordinator Jamey Batten. “We were able to get to know him and we were impressed not only by his basketball skills but by the way he carries himself as a person. We see a lot of potential in this young man.”

Head Coach Tony Stockman sees Benson as a big addition as well. "Devyn will give us added size inside and solidify us on the boards. We expect him to give us a boost against top level teams on our schedule."

At the signing, Benson expressed thanks to his parents and to his younger brother who, he said, “inspires me to do better every day.”  Benson feels a calling to teaching and will be majoring in Teacher Education at OCU.  He currently works as a mentor for special needs children in Mansfield and has a passion for investing in young people.

Mansfield athletic director Laurie Romano remarked, "Devyn is a great person and we are very proud of him.  He accomplished so much during his time here and he is loved by many.  I like to think that maybe someday he will return to teach at Mansfield Senior High School."
