Blazers Endure Cold Night in Batavia
BATAVIA, OH - The Blazers endured freezing rain, snow, and sleet on Friday night but couldn't overcome the host Cougars of UC Clermont as OCU fell 87-63 on the road. OCU struggled early as Clermont jumped out to a 10 point lead in the opening 7:30 of the game. Tirrell Cumberland put the Blazers on his back in the first half as he connected on 4 three point baskets to keep the struggling Blazers afloat. Clermont used strong rebounding and shot blocking on defense to take a 48-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
OCU showed some fight in the 2nd half as they worked to get the score down to 9 points with twelve minutes remaining. The Blazers had possession of the basketball and trailed 50-59 but their shot was off the mark. Clermont would respond with a three point basket to push the lead back to 12 with the score 62-50. The 9 point deficit is as close as OCU would get in the 2nd half. Despite a season high 7 three point baskets by Tirrell Cumberland, the Blazers would fall to Clermont, 87-63.
Ohio Christian struggled offensively as they shot 24 of 58 from the field on the night. The Blazers could only muster 8 assists on the night while committing 22 turnovers. Clermont enjoyed a 42-28 rebounding advantage in the contest. OCU was 10 of 24 from three point range on the night.
Cumberland led OCU with 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting from three. Mo Fall added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Milen Kostov added 11 points including 2 of 2 from long range. Kenny Cooper and Josh Delph rounded out the scoring for OCU with 6 points and 5 points respectively. The Blazers were without starters Mike Farrell (flu) and James Nelson on Friday night. The Blazers will look to regroup and get healthy on Tuesday night as Valor Christian comes to town in another OCAC rivalry matchup.
