Blazers Lose Close Battle to Clermont
CIRCLEVILLE, OH - The Trailblazers were looking to avenge a 24 point blowout at UC-Clermont earlier this month on Tuesday night. The visiting Gougars came in ready to play in what proved to be one of the most exciting games of the season.
The first half was a back and forth battle with several ties and lead changes throughout. UC-Clermont leaned on Devin Bartlett's 13 first half points while OCU used a balanced attack as both teams headed into the locker room knotted up at 33-33.
The second half proved to be a faster paced game with OCU taking an early 4 point lead in the final frame. Clermont battled back to tie the game and would take a 7 point lead with 4 minutes remaining. After a timout, OCU scored on back to back possessions. The second possession being a knock down three point basket in the corner by Tirrell Cumberland, which brought the Maxwell Center crowd to their feet. The shot by Cumberland brought OCU to within one point of Clermont with the score at 70-69 with just over two minutes remaining.
Clermont would answer with a basket of their own to push the lead back to three. A missed inside basket by OCU and a missed pair of free throws on the ensuing trip would give momentum back to the visiting Cougars. Clermont responded by converting a 2nd time in the closing minutes to push the lead to five. OCU worked the ball for a three point basket on their last two possessions in the final minute but both shots rattled out. The Blazers were forced to foul and Clermont went 5 of 6 from the line to close the door on the OCU rally.
Ohio Christian was led by Mo Fall who tallied 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Tirrell Cumberland added 16 points and two steals. Freshman Wesley Russell scored 10 points, 6 boards, and dished out 6 assists. Delorean Glanton added 8 points.
Clermont tallied 17 assists and 18 turnovers in the game compared to 10 assists and 16 turnovers for OCU. Both teams converted 28 field goals and both teams connected on 5 three point baskets. The rebound battle was neck and neck as Clermont grabbed 37 boards and OCU pulled down 39.
The Trailblazers are back in action on Friday night when they look to move to 6-0 in Mid-East region play against the Flames of Freewill Baptist (TN). The game is set for an 8pm tip.
