Former OCU All-American Tirrell Cumberland Joins Globetrotters Tour

HILLSBORO, OH - Former OCU guard Tirrell Cumberland will begin trotting the globe this January when he joins the Washington Generals as part of the 2013 Harlem Globetrotters Tour.

Since playing at Ohio Christian University, where he was a two-time NCCAA All-American, Cumberland has been teaching basketball to children in the Hillsboro area. He was recently presented the opportunity to join the Generals, who tour with the Harlem Globetrotters to compete in exhibition games.

Cumberland will join the team beginning on Thursday, Jan. 17th in Larado, Texas, a day before Washington plays the Globetrotters at Laredo Energy Arena. He is contracted through May 5.

Cumberland was hesitant at first but could not pass up the chance to travel with the Globetrotters.

"At first I just said no," he said. "I have a lot of kids I'm working with right now. But, once I thought about it, I realized I will get to see a lot of states I would never get to and other way. To play ball, too. [The Globetrotters] are doing their show and everything, but we"re just playing ball."

Cumberland sees the Generals as a chance to showcase his skills, hopefully launching his career.

"I want to play either overseas or somewhere here in the states," he said. "This is just a good way to get my name out there."

Cumberland played two years at Southern State where he became the school's all-time leading scorer in 2010 with 1,583 points during two seasons with the Patriots. He then went on to become a two-time All-American with OCU where he added 1,216 points to his career mark (2,799 total).
