Franklin Heights Falcon Jared Smith Signs with OCU

COLUMBUS, OH - The OCU athletic department is pleased to announce the addition of Jared Smith to the men's basketball program.  Smith was a standout guard for coach Todd Phillips at Franklin Heights High School in Columbus, Ohio.

"Jared is an amazing young man that has sacrificed individual success for the good of the team," said coach Phillips.  "He could have scored a lot more, but we needed him to run our offense and distribute the ball and he was selfless and bought into that role for us as a team leader."

Smith enjoyed a strong senior season as a Falcon, averaging 7.0 points, 4.1 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.  Smith gave opponents fits with his impressive speed and quickness throughout the season.  He improved his outside shot as well, shooting 31.3% from three point range.  Smith also enjoyed success on the football field and baseball field, lettering in both sports during his prep career.

Jared comes to OCU with strong connections to the school.  His mother, Jill Smith, is an alumnus of OCU.  Smith's grandfather, Floyd Smith, is a longtime ordained minister in the Churches of Christ in Christian Union and is currently serving as the lead pastor at Georgesville CCCU in Grove City, Ohio.

"We are excited about the addition of Jared Smith," said head coach Tony Stockman.  "He is lightning fast and works really hard and he understands team basketball.  He brings a lot of heart and enthusiasm to the court and we are looking forward to working with him over the next four years."

Smith joins an OCU team that finished 27-10 during the 2011-12 season.  The Blazers won the OCAC and Mid-East Region championships on their way to their first ever NCCAA Final Four appearance while finishing 3rd nationally.
