Men's Basketball Defeats Kuyper College 75-63

CIRCLEVILLE, OH - The OCU Trailblazers defended their home floor on Friday night in front of a capacity crowd at the Maxwell Leadership Center.  The host Blazers did not disappoint the home crowd on Pizza and Points night as OCU came away with a 75-63 victory over visiting Kuyper College.

Kuyper College came into the game having recently beaten NAIA affiliate, Indiana University Northwest as well as NCCAA powerhouse, Valley Forge Christian College.  

The Blazers fell behind 8-4 in the opening 5 minutes of the game but responded with a 10-2 run.  Kuyper rallied to take a 23-22 lead but Ohio Christian answered back in the final 4:30 of the half to take a 6 point advantage at halftime with the score at 34-28 in favor of OCU.  The Blazers first half effort was fueled by 11 offensive rebounds that led to 8 second chance points.

The second was half was back and forth for the first ten minutes as both teams battled it out.  Kuyper stayed in the game behind the hot hand of Omar Haynes who scored a game high 20 points.  A 6-0 Kuyper run gave the visiting Cougars a brief lead at the 12:25 mark with the score at 46-45 in favor of Kuyper.  

OCU then rallied with a 22-6 run over the next 7 minutes of play.  The Blazers buried four three point baskets with the sharpshooting prowess of Danny Schrock and Evan Mills to reclaim the lead.  A James Nelson drop-step layup at the 5:20 mark pushed the OCU lead to 15 with the score 67-52.  A pick and roll layup by Wesley Russell at the 2 minutes mark closed the door on Kuyper College as the Blazers went on to win 75-63.

OCU was led by Evan Mills who scored a team high 14 points while grabbing 8 rebounds.  Devyn Benson played big inside with 10 points and 8 rebounds.  Wesley Russell and Danny Schrock tossed in 8 points each in the win. 

Ohio Christian is now 21-8 on the season and 16-0 against NCCAA Division II teams.  The Blazers will wrap up their regular season on Saturday afternoon in a 3:00 PM game with visiting Johnson University.  Saturday will include Senior Day festivities before the start of the game.  Both Milen Kostov and James Neslon will be playing in their final regular season home games.
