OCU Extends Winning Streak to Six Games with 76-63 Win Over UC-Clermont
CIRCLEVILLE, OH - In front of a packed house, the OCU Trailblazers knocked off the visiting Cougars of UC-Clermont, 76-63 on Friday night. The win was the sixth consecutive victory for Ohio Christian.
The game started out very slowly for the Trailblazers as UC-Clermont jumped out to an early lead. OCU would go on to shoot a dismal 11 of 32 from the field in the first half for 34.4%. Clermont took advantage of the OCU shooting woes as they pushed their lead to as many as twelve points. Ohio Christian responded by putting together a 9-3 run to end the half and get to within six points with the score at 36-30 in favor of Clermont.
The Cougars would not go away in the second half as they pushed the lead to as many as ten points. Ohio Christian answered back with the offensive duo of James Nelson and Wesley Russell. OCU erased the ten point deficit and was able to tie the game at 49-49 with just under twelve minutes remaining.
Senior James Nelson went on to score six straight points to give OCU a 61-56 advantage with 5 minutes remaining. The capacity crowd at the Maxwell Leadership Center could be heard chanting "Big Game James" throughout the second half. The Blazers defense closed the door on the Cougars down the stretch as OCU would go on to win 76-63.
Senior James Nelson scored a game high 25 points on 10 of 13 shooting while also adding 3 blocked shots. Wesley Russell added 21 points and 11 rebounds in the win, scoring 20 of his 21 points in the pivotal second half. Evan Mills tossed in 11 points and added 6 boards. Senior Milen Kostov tallied 7 points on 2 of 4 shooting.
OCU is back in action on Tuesday night when they will host West Virginia University - Parkersburg. The non-conference game is scheduled for an 8:00 PM tip.
