Virginia Player of the Year Lawrence Parsons Signs with OCU
GALAX, VA - Ohio Christian University has landed a commitment from Virginia standout Lawrence Parsons. Parsons comes to OCU after winning back to back state championships at Galax High School in Virginia. Parsons had a sensational prep career at GHS where he played for head coach and Division I coach of the year, Verl Brown. Under Brown, Parsons led the Maroon Tide to a 27-2 record in his senior year while winning a 2nd consecutive state title.
"He really started breaking out last year in the state tournament as his confidence grew," said coach Brown. "The Lord has blessed him physically and since then he has grown into a special player. He is big and he plays big and he is a kid we have all grown to love."
Parsons, had a record breaking performance during the state tournament, averaging 14.5 points, 16.5 rebounds, and 9.5 blocks per game. His 10 blocks in the state semifinals broke a state record, previously held by NBA Hall of Famer Moses Malone. Parsons improved his game throughout the season, adding a mid range jumper and converting 60% of his field goal attempts. For his landmark season, Parsons was selected unanimously as the 2012 Virginia High School Coaches Association Division I Player of the Year.
His journey to success hasn't always been an easy road for the 6'6" forward with a 7'1" wing span. "We cut him in his freshman year," said Coach Brown. "Since then he has grown and developed and worked really hard to get to where he is today. He has only played 3 years and he will continue to get better in college."
Parsons will add size, athleticism, rebounding, and defense to an OCU team that finished 27-10 last season on their way to their first ever NCCAA Final Four appearance.
"We are thrilled to be able to work with Lawrence and have him as a member of our basketball family over the next four years," said OCU head coach Tony Stockman. "He is loved in his community, is a tireless worker, and has a great attitude. His physical gifts will make him an impact player for us on both ends of the floor."
OCU tips off the season on November 2nd against Indiana University East in the opening round of the Mt. Vernon Nazarene University Tipoff tournament.
