Lady Trailblazers (#15 in Nation) Still Undefeated in RegionOn Friday, the Lady Trailblazers defeated another regional opponent in Freewill Baptist Bible College. OCU won the match in three straight games. The win extended their record to 11-0 in the Mid-East Region. Marlaina Shotsky led the Blazers with 19 kills and 8 aces, while Leslie Turner added 4 kills and 7 digs. Setter Whitney Pontius totaled 31 assists and 3 aces. Coach Brothers said, "Our focus was on refining our offensive attack. The team had good mental focus and kept the energy up throughout this match. We ran a quick offense efficiently and stretched the Flame's defense. We also took advantage of Free Will's poor passing with aggressive serves tallying 16 aces." So far this season, the OCU volleyball team has won a school record sixteen matches, and the Lady Blazers remain undefeated in the NCCAA Mid-East Region (11-0). It is that outstanding record in the region that has helped them hold a spot in the top 15 in the NCCAA Division II National rankings all season. OCU has two players in the top twenty in kill average per game. Marlaina Shotsky is 2nd in the nation with 5.4 per game, and Brittany Martin is 20th with 3.39. The team is in the top ten in the nation in attack percentage, assists, and kills, and in the top twenty nationally in blocks, aces, and digs. The Lady Trailblazers are working hard to continue to improve and finish the regular season strong. They have three matches left in the regular season, including tonight at OSU-Newark, before travelling to Knoxville, Tennessee for the regional tournament October 26-27th. |
