Chelsea Black Scores 33 in Loss at Clermont
BATAVIA, OH - The OCU women's basketball team showed heart and overcame a 14 point first half deficit on Friday night at UC Clermont but fell in a tightly contested game to the host Cougars, 81-71. Clermont came out of the gate on fire and took a quick 34-22 lead before OCU stormed back. The Blazers regrouped after a Mandy Wray timeout to go on a quick 8-0 run.
Chelsea Black and Shelby Roe were in the zone as the duo hit their first 7 three pointers of the game to bring OCU back. Black would go on to score a game high 33 points in the game as she was hitting shots from downtown and breaking down defenders to get to the rim throughtout the game.
Clermont took a slim lead into halftime but the Blazers had regained the momentum heading into the 2nd half. The game was back and forth in the final frame and came down to the closing moments. With three minutes remaining, and trailing by 4 points, OCU stole the basketball and had a chance to get within two points but the layup rolled off the rim. Clermont was able to push the lead to 6 points on the ensuing possession. OCU did get back to within 4 points with a minute left but ran out of time and were forced to foul in the closing minute. Clermont hit free throws down the stretch to close the door on the Blazer comeback bid, but it was a valiant effort for the visitors.
Black finished with a career high 33 points including 7 three point baskets. Shelby Roe tallied 15 points for the Blazers. Sharonda Jones was big in the lane with 12 points for OCU.
The Blazers are back in action this Saturday when they take on Johnson University at 1pm.
