Lady Blazers Get Tripped Up By Rams in OCAC Tourney
HILLSBORO, OH - The OCU Lady Trailblazers came up short against the #3 seeded Lady Rams of Ohio Mid-Western University on Friday afternoon, falling 71-70 in overtime . OCU came in as the #2 seeded team in the tournament and was facing Ohio Mid-Western for the first time this season, after the OCAC rivals had not played in the regular season.
The first half was back and forth and both teams were able to put together 6 point leads. Both teams struggled from three point range early on and throughout the game as both teams combined to only shoot 5 of 41 from downtown. Ohio Mid-Western went on a 4-0 run to end the half with a 33-29 advantage heading into the intermission.
The second half was an all out battle as the lead changed hands on 7 different occassions. Amy Jo Bishop and Sharonda Jones hit clutch baskets in the closing moments to keep the game tied at 62-62 with 5 seconds left in regulation. OCU had possession out of bounds with 4.7 seconds left but turned the ball over as the buzzer sounded and were unable to get a shot.
A thrilling overtime would eventually come down to the last 60 seconds. Ohio Mid-Western was able to hit a jump shot and convert free throws to take a three point lead in the with less than a minute remaining on the clock. OCU had possession of the ball and trailed 71-68 with 14.8 seconds remaining. The Blazers worked the ball up the floor and kicked it to the corner where Amy Jo Bishop had an open three point look with 5 seconds remaining. The shot went halfway down, rattled around, and slowly spun out with 2.0 seconds remaining. Sharonda Jones gathered the rebound and scored as the buzzer rang, declaring the Rams victorious 71-70, in what proved to be a nailbiter of a finish.
Sharonda Jones led the OCU effort with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Bishop tallied 13 points and 6 boards for the Blazers. Ohio Christian struggled from downtown, shooting 4 of 29 from three point range. The Blazers dished out 8 assists while turning the ball over 13 times. Ohio Mid-Western won the battle of the boards 36-32.
OCU will now prepare for the Mid-East Region tournament at Boyce College in Louisville, Kentucky. The Blazers will be the #2 seed in the regional tournament as well.
