Lady Blazers Win Three More this Week and Advance to 17-3
The Lady Trailblazers were on a mission this week. They set out to improve on the defensive end and play with intensity for the entire forty minutes. When their defense and rebounding picked up, there was no stopping the Lady Blazers, as they picked up three more wins this week, in decisive fashion.
On Tuesday, the Lady Trailbazers came out intense and focused when they hosted OCAC Conference opponent OSU-Mansfield. The Lady Trailblazers jumped out to a 46-27 halftime lead and never looked back. The OCU defense forced 32 OSU-Mansfield turnovers, including 5 steals each by freshmen guards Kristen Hughes and Dannyel Butte. The Lady Trailblazers were led offensively by senior All-American guard Brenda Carter with 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting (also had 4 steals). Freshman guard Shelby Roe added 13 points and 7 rebounds, and junior forward Danielle Fleming chipped in 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting.
Thursday, it was more of the same, as the OCU women's basketball team faced OCAC rival World Harvest Bible College in the Leadership Center. OCU's tenacious defense again proved to be too much for their opponent, as the Lady Trailblazers took a 58-25 halftime lead. It was move of the same in the second half, as the Lady Blazers defeated the Lady Warriors of WHBC 94-51. OCU's defense was led by junior forward Angela Thorne's 7 steals. OCU was again led in scoring by Carter with 28 points on 11 of 15 shooting from the floor. Freshman Shelby Roe was red-hot from the field, shooting 7 of 8, including four 3 pt field goals, and finishing with 20 points. All ten of the Lady Trailblazers put points on the board in the win.
Then on Friday, the Lady Trailblazers played their third game in four days as they hosted Miami-Middletown. The story of the game was similar to that of the last few: OCU's press and intense defense was too much for the Thunder Hawks from MUM. Dannyel Butte and Kristen Hughes had 5 and 4 steals, respectively. Brenda Carter again led OCU in scoring with 28 points and 4 assists. Danielle Fleming and Shelby Roe also finished in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. All ten Lady Blazers scored in the game, as OCU routed Miami-Middletown 78-44, advancing to 17-3 overall.
The Lady Blazers will take on another OCAC conference opponent on Tuesday when they host Southern State Community College at 6pm.
