Lady Trailblazers Defeat #1 ranked Kentucky Christian University

Tuesday was a night of history-making for the Ohio Christian University women's basketball team. They hosted Kentucky Christian University, with the #1 seed in the Mid-East Region on the line.  OCU (#3 in nation) came out firing, taking an early 19-3 lead over the #1 nationally ranked KCU team.  Kentucky Christian came back and cut the lead to six points at the half.  But the Lady Trailblazer's full court pressure proved to be too much for the Lady Knights, and OCU won by a final score of 63-54.  The win placed the Lady Trailblazers at the top of the Mid-East Region for the first time in the history of the women's basketball program.  The loss was KCU's first loss in the region in over 25 years.

OCU was led by senior guard Brenda Carter with 15 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals.  Junior forward Angela Thorne finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, including some crucial free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Lady Blazers.  Freshmen guard Dannyel Butte had another solid game with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 assists.  Shelby Roe, a freshman guard, chipped in 12 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals.  The Lady Blazers also honored Brenda Carter and Brittany Martin, the seniors on the squad, on Tuesday night.

"It was a very special night in alot of ways.  It was our Senior Night, so we honored our two seniors and had a special ceremony for Brenda and Brittany to recognize their careers here at OCU and thank them for their contribution to our women's basketball program over the past few years," said Head Coach Mandy Wray.  "But what we were able to accomplish on the court was also extremely special and something I don't think our girls will ever forget.  I am so proud of the ways our girls played tonight and the history they were able to make with our win tonight.  It was an exciting night for Trailblazer fans and for our women's basketball program," said Wray. The OCU women will travel to World Harvest Bible College on Friday, Feb 19th for the semi-finals of the Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
