OCU Claims Regional Honors and At-Large Bid at Nationals
LOUISVILLE, KY - The OCU women made it to the regional championship game for the third straight season but came up short against top ranked Kentucky Christian University on Saturday afternoon, losing 87-57 to the defending champs. The Blazers forced 26 KCU turnovers but shot a dismal 27% from the field and 16% from downtown.
OCU made it to the regional final after defeating Johnson University on Friday night in the quarterfinals. The Blazers dominated the game, winning 97-43 over the #3 seed from Knoxville, Tennessee.
Kara Zwick led the way with a game high 20 points. Maritza Will added 16 points for OCU. Chelsea Black added 13 points and 8 assists. Gretchen Meyer tallied 10 boards and 4 points in the win. The OCU defense came up big as they forced Johnson into 40 turnovers with full court pressure.
OCU junior guard Shelby Roe was named to the Mid-East Region Honorable Mention team.
Point guard Chelsea Black was selected as a 2nd Team All Mid-East Region honoree.
Sharonda Jones and Dannyel Butte were voted as 1st Team All Mid-East Region selections.
OCU will be the at-large team in the NCCAA National Tournament as the host school. The Blazers will enter the tournament as the #3 seed and will face #6 Trinity Bible College in the quarterfinals. The game is set for Thursday, March 8th with an 8:00PM tip.
