OCU Finishes 3rd at NCCAA National Tournament
CIRCLEVILLE, OH - The Lady Blazers (20-16) hosted the NCCAA National Tournament for the 2nd straight season and once again finished with a pair of wins. OCU won in round 1 but then fell to Maranatha Baptist 62-46 in the semifinals. OCU defeated Clearwater Christian in the consolation bracket to end the tournament with a win.
Round 1 - Elite Eight
The Lady Blazers defeated Trinity Bible College 78-61 on Thursday to advance to the Final Four of the NCCAA National Tournament. Trinity Bible took a 29-28 lead at the half, but the Lady Blazer defense was too much for them in the 2nd half. While 10 Lady Blazers scored in the game, they were led by sophomore guard Dannyel Butte with 16 points, 8 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Junior guard Shelby Roe hit 4 of 5 3pt attempts in the 2nd half to finish the game with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Round 2 - Final Four
The Lady Blazers were defeated by #2 seed Maranatha Baptist in the semifinals 46-62. The OCU defense forced the Lady Crusaders into 23 turnovers, but the Blazers were unable to get things going offensively, shooting 23% from the field, and just 8% from behind the arc. Junior guard Shelby Roe was the only Lady Blazer in double figures, finishing with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
3rd Place Game
OCU defeated Clearwater Christian 72-62 to win the 3rd place game at the NCCAA National Tournament. Freshman guard Sarah Bechtel led the Lady Blazers with 15 points, while junior guard Shelby Roe added 12 points and 4 steals. Chelsea Black and Maritza Will chipped in 10 points each. Shelby Roe was also named to the NCCAA 2012 National All-Tournament Team.
