Lady Blazers - OCAC Champions
The Lady Trailblazers won their second consecutive Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference championship this weekend, with several of the women earning All-Conference honors. Kaity Wyeth was named Freshman of the Year.
The Ohio Christian University women's basketball team traveled to Hillsboro, Ohio over the weekend for the OCAC (Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference) Championship Tournament. At the Tournament banquet, several Lady Trailblazers earned All-Conference honors. Danielle Fleming and Kaity Wyeth were named 1st Team All-OCAC, while Angela Thorne and Chelsea Black received Honorable Mention honors. Wyeth was also named Freshman of the Year.
On Friday, the Lady Blazers showed why they were the #1 seed, defeating #4 ranked Southern State Community College 113-60 in a balanced attack in which all fifteen Lady Traiblazers scored. Sophomore guard led OCU with 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting, including 3 of 6 behind the arc. Senior Danielle Fleming and freshman Sharonda Jones added 14 points each, while freshmen Kaity Wyeth and Brittany Rucker chipped in 12 and 10, respectively.
On Saturday, OCU faced off against UC-Clermont. The Lady Trailblazers split with the Cougars from UC-C earlier this season, with each team winning on their home courts. OCU jumped out to a 13-1 lead and although UC-Clermont fought back, the Lady Trailblazers pulled out the victory 92-82 and won their second straight OCAC Title. Senior Angela Thorne led the Lady Trailblazers with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Jones and Fleming had 15 points a piece, while Wyeth added 14 points and dished out a team high 7 assists. Freshman Gretchen Meyer and Roe chipped in 13 points each.
The Lady Trailblazers (ranked #2 in the NCCAA National poll) advanced to 28-5 overall, including 9-1 in the OCAC. They will travel to Nashville, Tennessee on Friday to face the Lady Knights of Kentucky Christian University, #1 in the Nation and the defending National Champions. OCU also has the priviledge of hosting the NCCAA Division II National Tournament in Circleville, Ohio from March 10-12.
