Top-Ranked Lady Blazers Falter to KCU
With nine minutes to go, the top-ranked Trailblazers trailed Kentucky Christian by two points.
Then, the Knights went off. KCU drained four three-pointers down the stretch and closed the game on a 35-11 run to defeat the Trailblazers 95-69.
"For about the first 30 minutes when Kentucky Christian made a big play we answered with a big play of our own," OCU coach Mandy Wray said. "It was back and forth. We wanted to push the tempo and we did some.
"But in the last 10 minutes, it just kind of fell apart."
OCU (24-5), which lost for the first time this season in the region, was held without a field goal for stretches of four minutes and 3:55 in the last nine minutes. Kentucky Christian assembled runs of 14-3 and 13-1, respectively, during the Trailblazer droughts.
KCU shot 17 of 27 from the field in the second half, compared to 12 of 36 from OCU.
"They're a good shooting team, and I don't want to take anything away from what they did, but our defensive intensity during the last 10 minutes wasn't where it needed it be," Wray said. "We gave them a lot of good, open looks."
Tara Weddle poured in a game-high 27 points for KCU.
Kaity Wyeth tallied 22 points and Danielle Fleming added 21 and Shelby Roe eight to pace the Trailblazers.
OCU is slated to host a doubleheader on Friday at home against Freewill Baptist. The women start at 6 p.m., followed by the men.
