OCU Softball Falls to Oakland City

The Ohio Christian University softball team travelled to Oakland City, IN to face defending Mideast Region champions the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University. Despite showing tremendous improvement over the2010 campaign the Trailblazers fell 9-1 and 10-0 in games one and two respectively.

In game one the Trailblazers had one batter hit with a pitch, earned 4 bases on balls and had one hit against the Mighty Oaks pitching staff. Freshman shortstop PaLaura Parker managed to make her way around the bases in the third inning for the Trailblazers only run of the day. Defensively the Trailblazers gave up seven runs in the last two innings of the game to give Oakland City the 9-1 win.

In a cold, sleety game two the Oakland City pitching staff held the Trailblazers hitless in 17 trips to the plate. Defensively the Trailblazers had some costly miscues and errors that gave Oakland City the 10-0 win.

"We struggled both offensively and defensively in both games today. Our youth, and inexperience, showed itself at some very inopportune times," said Head Coach Emory Clark. "When you compare the results of today's games with the results of games against similar teams a year ago you can see that we have improved and come a long way. We will continue to work and improve, and I am still confident in this team's ability to bring it all together and put some wins on the board this year."

MacKenna Jennings, freshman pitcher for the Trailblazers, finished the day with six strikeouts increasing her season total to 19. "We faced a well coached, good hitting team today. I knew Coach Buchta would have her girls ready to play," said Coach Clark. "MacKenna and I are still developing a system that works for us, but I think she is pitching well. She is averaging 7.39 strikeouts per game and her ERA is only 5.06. That's not too bad when you consider who she pitched against these last two games. I think MacKenna will continue to improve and has the potential to become a strong presence for us in the pitcher's circle."

The Trailblazers will return to action Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 5:30 PM against the Hilltopppers of Ohio University-Chillicothe. The double header action is scheduled to be played at Ted Lewis Park in downtown Circleville. "This will be our annual Circleville Girl's Softball League appreciation night," said Coach Clark. "We have enjoyed a good working relationship with Chris (Caudill) and the Circleville Girl's Softball League. This is one of the ways we let them know how much we appreciate that relationship."
