Trailblazers Fall to UC-Clermont in Season Openers
The Ohio Christian University Trailblazer softball team travelled to Milford, OH to open their season on March 17, 2011 against Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference (OCAC) rival UC-Clermont. The Trailblazers played well but eventually fell to the Cougars in both games of the double header by scores of 7-4 and 7-2, respectively. "We have shown a great deal of improvement from our first two games last season. While we would have liked to put a win or two on the board on opening day, I am happy with where we are and I fully expect those wins to come soon," said Head Coach Emory Clark.
Offensively freshman PaLaura Parker led the way for the Trailblazers going 3 for 7 on the day. Parker had two doubles and one triple, one run batted in, one stolen base and scored three of the Trailblazers six runs on the day. Freshmen Lindsay Frazier and Sarah Williams each contributed one hit and one run scored. Freshman Rachel Briggs was one for six on the day with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Freshman MacKenna Jennings contributed 2 singles while driving in one run and junior Allison Mays had one hit with one RBI. Sophomores Elizabeth Smith and Crystal Thorne also added one hit each for the day.
"I was excited about this freshman class and what they were going to bring to our program, and they have not disappointed us," said Coach Clark. "PaLaura (Parker) showed us just a glimpse of her potential as our lead off hitter and really led the charge for us offensively. This was our first time out for the season and I expect we will continue to improve and we'll keep putting things together, and eventually we'll put some wins on the board."
Defensively the Trailblazers were lead by freshman pitcher MacKenna Jennings. Jennings faced 64 batters on the day and only gave up eight walks while setting a team record for most strikeouts in a game with eight recorded strikeouts in game one. She would finish the day with a total of thirteen strikeouts. The Trailblazers finished the day with only four errors and fielding percentage of .889. "Again, we have come a long way defensively," said Coach Clark. "We will keep making adjustments and improvements along the way and I think we will be fine on the defensive side of the game."
The Trailblazers return to action on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 in a double header against the JV squad from Cedarville University. Those games are now scheduled to be played at the Action Sports Complex in Dayton, Ohio with a game one start time of 3:30 PM.
