OCAC Tournament Roundup

To begin the 2010 Ohio Collegiate Athletics Conference, Ohio Christian faced off against Southern State Community College.

The Trailblazers came out strong and put together a solid 3 set victory over the Patriots with scores 25-9, 25-17, 25-7.

Sophomore Linette Shetler  and Freshman Ashley Southard headed up the offense with 8 kills a piece. Freshman Kelli Manning had a breakout match with 5 kills on 9 attempts. Shetler added 5 aces. Freshman Rachel Briggs tallied 13 digs.

"Having just played Southern State on Tuesday, we knew we had to focus on our game plan," stated Coach Brothers. "Hali Burleson, Rachel Briggs and Kelli Manning did a good job of stepping up. The team's passing was on so we were able to run the offense matching our 13 kills per set that we had on Tuesday night."

With the win, OCU was matched up against the #1 seed OSU-Marion in the semi-final match.

The Trailblazers came out strong against the Scarlet Wave in Set 1, but could not muster a strong rally in either of the 2nd or 3rd sets to challenge OSU-Marion. Marion took the match 23-25, 17-25, 19-25.

Team leaders were: Southard with 9 kills, Shetler tallied 3 aces and 11 digs, and Freshman Mary Ashbaucher had 25 assists.

"This was a lesson in consistency and energy," stated Coach Wes Brothers. "We made a few hitting errors late in the 1st set that cost us the set and had trouble playing a solid 2nd and 3rd set. We know what we need to do to pull out the win and we will be working hard in practice to put our best effort into the Mid-East Region matches."

Several Trailblazers received awards for their accomplishments in the 2010 season. Junior Kristen Uetrecht and Freshman Ashley Southard received 1st Team OCAC honors. Sophomore Linette Shetler was placed on the 2nd Team OCAC. Coach Wes Brothers was named 2010 OCAC Coach of the Year.
