Ohio Christian Upsets Clark State
The OCU Volleyball team pulled out a close road win over OCAC opponent Clark State Community College 15-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23.
Five OCU hitters had 7 or more kills in the 4 set victory. Freshman Ashley Southard had a solid match with 10 kills and a 21% hitting percentage. Freshman Rachel Briggs chipped in 3 aces at critical moments in the match. Defensively, Team Captain Kristen Uetrecht added 3 solo blocks and 2 block assists and was complemented by Freshman Tiffany Mosher's 19 digs.
In OCU's previous match with Clark State, the Trailblazers lost in 4 sets 18-25, 25-22, 12-25, 18-25.
Ohio Christian University came out slow in set 1 getting down 14-16 before Coach Brothers took a timeout. The team's tempo did not pick up and saw the first set close out 15-25. In set two, OCU continued to struggle getting down 1-7. Coming out of a timeout, OCU was able to establish its offense with Hillary Stump cutting a cross court shot for a kill. Ashley Southard quickly added a kill and setter Mary Ashbaucher added a tip kill to keep the Trailblazer run rolling. Both Meredith Fairrow and Ashley Southard added 2 kills a piece to put the Trailblazers ahead going into the middle part of the 2nd set. Behind aggressive serving and good all around team play, the Trailblazers took the 2nd set 25-22. The third set saw an early back and forth struggle for the lead, before Hillary Stump was able to pound a few kills through the block. Ashbaucher ran a mixed offense to net OCU the 3rd set win 25-17. The fourth set was the closest set with OCU holding a slight advantage. OCU's outside hitters were able to find openings in the Eagle defense for 3 kills early. In the middle and late parts of the set, Southard and Shetler established a solid block and added 6 kills to maintain the slight advantage and take the set 25-23.
"This was a good win and it was nice to see everyone step up and contribute," commented Coach Brothers. "Whether we win or lose, we are having fun and focusing on improving every part of our game. I could not ask for much more out of a team than that."
OCU has an overall record of 11-15 and an OCAC conference record of 2-5.
Ohio Christian University Volleyball hosts the Ohio College Athletics Conference's 2010 OCAC Championship Tournament on Saturday, October 23rd with matches scheduled for 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm.
