Article Written by Dr. Ron Adkins, Dean of the School of Ministry and Theology
In 1999, David A. Case, professor of Bible and theology at Ohio Christian University for 55 years, wrote a self-published book for the church called What We Believe: A Layperson’s Guide to Wesleyan Theology. I was privileged to be one of the students he selected to help him with his original work. After his sudden passing on August 1, 2025, I sought a way to honor his memory by editing his book for publication.
This is a primer in Wesleyan theology covering 13 topics. Each chapter covers a different topic, such as God, the Bible, Sin, Salvation, etc. Each chapter begins with scripture and explanatory notes. It moves then to the theological concept. The chapters end with discussion questions. The book includes an expanded glossary, subject index, and scripture index.
The original book has been used for Discipleship, Sunday School, Membership Classes, and as a college primer. It is meant to help laypeople expand their knowledge of basic theology within Wesleyan doctrine. It has been endorsed by college presidents, bishops, superintendents, professors, pastors, and chaplains from five different denominations.
