Church Service Day 2018 – Goodwill Trumps Rain! image

Church Service Day is an annual opportunity for Ohio Christian University (OCU) students to practice giving back to area churches and charities through hands-on work projects completed all on a single day!

Church Services Day 2018, undertaken on September 26, proved a worthy addition to this traditional service-above-self event!  About 400 students lent their energies to 31 work projects in local churches, residences, and charity organizations.

After an early breakfast, students formed into teams and received directions to and instructions for their projects. Eager teams headed out to project sites in a steady rain that gradually diminished. By mid-morning, the gray cloud-cover broke, pierced by warming fall sunshine.

This years’ service sites included nineteen churches, a homeless services center, a school, a downtown parking lot, a mission center, and seven individual residences at locations ranging from Circleville to Ashville, Chillicothe, Columbus, Grove City, Lancaster, Lockbourne, and Williamsport.

Typical duties included cleaning windows and carpets at Grove City Lutheran Church, weeding and mulching flower gardens, trimming hedges, and digging a drain trench at Riverside Bible Church, and washing vans and preparing lunches for the homeless at the Dream Center at Rock City Church in Columbus.

The OCU servants-heart teams achieved laudable results in their half-day projects. Recipients of the goodwill efforts expressed their gratefulness with broad smiles, warm handshakes, and “Thank Yous” and “Bless Yous.”

In the course of five weeks, the students developed a charter, raised community support, and organized a black and white dinner for over 40 caregivers and nurses in the Atlanta area. “For the way they started and the way they finished in that class time, I was just truly amazed,” their professor, Selena Buchanan, said. The class normally requires students to plan for a fictious event, however, class member LaShaeele
