OCU Emergency Management Program Ranks #3

Best Schools has ranked Ohio Christian University’s Emergency and Disaster Management Program #3 among the top 15 programs based on its quality and courses provided, as well as the school’s other awards, rankings, and reputation.

OCU's Emergency and Disaster Management program trains students to lead during disasters. Graduates contribute during every stage of disaster management and recovery, including providing immediate relief and rebuilding and redeveloping communities.

Student Lesli Holt, Operations Manager for Warren County Ohio's Office of Emergency Management, comments that “OCU’s Emergency Management program is helping me enhance my skills and ability to better prepare my county in emergencies and disasters.  As an EM practitioner in the field, I have already used knowledge gained from OCU to improve our plans and processes and have applied perspectives from the Christian worldview learned in each course toward my everyday interactions.”

Dr. Thad Hicks, Director of OCU's Emergency and Disaster Management Program, explains, “As the field of Emergency Management grows, our program is responding to identified needs and focusing our courses on them.  An OCU degree in Emergency and Disaster Management readies students for an established and exciting profession, and prepares them for one of the emerging “new missions” techniques taking place around the world."

Dr. Caleb T. Friedeman recently joined Ohio Christian University’s Religion Department as Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies. A disciple of Jesus Christ with a passion to serve the Church as a pastor-theologian, Friedeman brings to the department the heart of a pastor and the mind of a scholar. Friedeman holds a B.A. in Ancient Languages from Asbury University, an M.A. in Biblical Literature from Wesley Biblical Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Biblical Theology (New Testament) from Wheaton College. Ohio Christian University (OCU) Emergency Management students responded to the call to serve the men, women, and children of Panama City, Florida, following deadly Hurricane Michael striking Florida’s panhandle on October 10.   Salvation Army teams in Florida are tasked by the State of Florida to deliver food and supplies to the areas hardest hit, where has been very difficult to reach survivors due to the destroyed infrastructure. OCU is pleased to announce that Atlanta businessman Dr. Malon Mimms has gifted a 2.55 million dollar building and property in Atlanta, Georgia.The building is located on I-75 and will be used to establish the second Georgia educational site for OCU.  In giving the gift, Dr. Mimms expressed a hope to provide a great opportunity for the Atlanta area by investing in Ohio Christian University.  Dr. Mimms also expressed that he hopes others will be inspired to give to the cause of Christian education.OCU will use the building to offer AIM evening classes designed for busy adults. Ohio Christian University seeks qualified faculty of the highest caliber. In the fall semester, four OCU faculty earned doctorates. Congratulations to Drs. Jacob Dodson, Sylvia McDonald, David Uhl, and Kelvin Webb. These faculty lead the way in demonstrating life-long learning for their students. Dr. Jacob D. Dodson has been an adjunct faculty member since 2009. He earned the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Christian Theology from Regent University. Ohio Christian University Professor of Substance Abuse Counseling Dr. Jim Smith contributed two chapters for the recently published collaborative work Nelson's Church Leader's Manual for Congregational Care, available from Thomas Nelson Publishers. The two chapters are on lay ministry care for those with substance abuse issues and mental disorders.  Smith is well qualified to write on these topics as he holds three graduate degrees and is a licensed counselor as well as an ordained minister.  Smith states, "The connection to be part of this collaboration was brought about by God." Ohio Christian University was visited March 29-31 by the Higher Learning Commission, which accredits all universities in Ohio. The visiting team gave OCU a glowing report. The team met with administrators, staff, trustees, and students along with alumni and community leaders. This is the third team to visit Ohio Christian University this year, with the Ohio Board of Regents recommending 10 years of reaccreditation and the national Teacher Education Accreditation Council recommending full accreditation approval of Ohio Christian University's Teacher Education program.
