The Ohio Christian University’s School of Business and Government’s Center for Faith and Liberty presented its seventh annual Faith & Liberty Award to Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council. Perkins joins David Barton, James Dobson, and Ken Blackwell in receiving this prestigious award.
Perkins hosts Washington Watch with Tony Perkins and authored No Fear: Real Stories of a Courageous New Generation Standing for Truth. Faith & Liberty Award recipients distinguish themselves through unwavering commitment to the Christian worldview, perseverance, and promotion of faith, liberty, and freedom.
A pro-life and pro-family policy leader, Perkins is a conservative who served in the Louisiana Legislature. To address trends in marriage instability and divorce, he authored Louisiana’s Covenant Marriage Law that influenced legislators nationwide.
Perkins influenced Louisiana by authoring state policy initiatives, including a family impact statement that requires state agencies to consider impacts of rules and regulations on families, comprehensive abortion clinic regulations, a state genetic non-discrimination law, a public school Internet filtering requirement, and expansion of the Louisiana Department of Corrections’ partnership with faith-based organizations to reduce recidivism.
Under Perkins, Family Research Council's influence has grown on Capitol Hill and nationally through its presence at state and regional political and policy events. Through the Council, Perkins has fostered a national network of pastors and churches, encouraging them to influence national culture.
An ordained minister, Perkins is an elder in his home church and is guest minister in churches nationwide. He serves on the board of Caring to Love Ministries, a Louisiana pregnancy resource center. He is president of the Council for National Policy and a former U.S. Marine.
An Ohio native, Perkins shared his insights on how OCU students can become vehicles for change for the good in America by living out their Christian faith in their callings in every realm of society.
In presenting the 2018 Award, OCU President Jon S. Kulaga said, “OCU is pleased to be partnering with Perkins and the Family Research Council to address critical societal problems that can be resolved through Christian initiatives. We are pleased to present this award to Tony Perkins as an exemplar of Christian influence in our culture for faith and liberty.”
