Ohio Christian University’s Head Coach for the Men’s basketball team, Casey Coons was recently honored by his alma mater. On Oct. 5, Coons was inducted into Taylor University Athletics 2019 Hall of Fame. Other inductees included Molly Currens, Tanya Crevier, Rick Atkinson, and Tyler Beachler.

“It was an awesome honor,” Coons said of the induction ceremony. “It was really cool because all of the other four inductees I know really well. Two of them I went to school with, Coach Atkinson I interacted with while I was an assistant there, and Tanya Crevier worked all nine years of basketball camp while I had been there.”

Coons played for the Trojan’s basketball team from 2009-2013 and later served as an assistant coach for the program for three years. He joined Ohio Christian’s Trailblazers last year as Head Coach for the Men’s basketball team.

His head coach during his years at Taylor, Paul Patterson, who has since retired, said Coons was an exceptional athlete and has strong character.

“He’s not just a good basketball player, he’s a great teammate,” Patterson said, “he made his teams better around him, their individual play was better because he was there. He was well respected and a strong leader for his time at Taylor University.”

While at Taylor, Coons earned a number of individual accolades including being a two-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American as well as a four-time All-MCC standout. By the time he graduated, he held the program record for both three-pointers made as well as three pointers made in a season (2012-13) and finished as Taylor's second leading scorer with 2,138 career points. He also earned honors off the court, being twice awarded CoSIDA Academic All-American.

The passion Coons showed both on and off the court made him stand out among his peers and in the eyes of his coaches. “Casey was a leader,” Patterson said, “he had a strong faith himself. It was a privilege to coach him.”

Coach Coon’s attributed his passion and Coach Patterson’s guidance as major factors that grew him as a player, a Christian, and motivated him to pursue coaching.

“Basketball was a tool the Lord used to shape me in a lot of ways as a man and taught me more about my faith walk than probably anything else in my life,” Coons said. “The coaches I played for and the way they impacted my life was what drove me into coaching.”

To Coons, being inducted into Taylor’s Hall of Fame was not about the individual accolades he earned but was instead a reflection of the journey.
