Local resident and friend of Ohio Christian University, Mr. Harry Canfield donated a beautiful Baldwin Model L grand piano to the University’s Music Department. According to Mr. Canfield, the piano was his wife Eileen’s favorite piano.
Eileen was a lifelong pianist who blessed many in her church as well as local nursing homes with her piano playing. A bronze plaque fixed to the instrument states the following sentiment, “This piano was a source of hours of listening pleasure for many of us and was Eileen Canfield’s prized possession. ‘To God Be The Glory’.”
Canfield’s decision to donate the piano was in harmony with his family’s desire that it be located in a place where it will continue to be a blessing in future years.
Music Department Chair John Anthony expressed the school’s gratefulness: “A special thanks goes to Professor of Piano Mary Jane Dean and her husband Gary Dean who worked tirelessly with Mr. Canfield in this project.”
The piano is located in the Ministry and Performing Arts Center small auditorium where many students, music faculty, and the community can enjoy it for years to come.

Columbus Symphony to Perform in Ministry & Performing Arts Center

The beloved Columbus Symphony holiday tradition of Holiday Pops returns in
2021 with spectacular performances of popular holiday songs and classic
carols. Conductor Ron Jenkins will lead the Columbus Symphony in
performances of “Winter Wonderland,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,”
“Sleigh Ride,” “All I Want for Christmas is You,” and many more.

Drama Team Presents Fall Production: Dark Road

Ohio Christian University’s Drama Team is honored to present this year’s
fall production, Dark Road, written by Laura Lundgren Smith, on Friday, Nov.
12th at 7:00 PM in the Ministry and Performing Arts Center’s auditorium.
Admission is free and open to the public. This play may not be suitable for
some younger audiences who may find the subject matter disturbing. Parental
discretion is advised.
The play focuses on the story of a female concentration camp guard, Greta,
who has been given a death sentence for her crimes committed under the Nazi

Music Department Revamps Music Education Degree

The Ohio Christian University Music Department is pleased to announce that
campus students can major in a newly revamped Bachelor of Science in Music
Education. The new program began with the start of the Fall 2020 Semester and
is a state-approved program leading to initial licensure with the Ohio
Department of Education to teach K-12 Music Education. It has been
streamlined to prioritize courses that Music Education majors need to be
successful in their careers.
Students in the Music Education Program can choose an Instrumental or
Vocal/Choral Concentration and will hone their skills

OCU Music Department Welcomes New Vocal Adjunct

The OCU Music Department welcomes Dr. Dione Bennett as its newest adjunct
voice and choral faculty member. Dr. Bennett brings to her position a
background in classical singing and gospel music, a deep commitment to
Christ, and a love for vocal instruction.Her voice has been heard in operas,
recitals, and oratorios both nationwide and internationally. She has
performed Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen, Bess in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess;
Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème; Suor Genevieffa in Puccini’s Suor Angelica,
to name a few. She has also appeared as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah,
Beethoven’s

OCU Receives Music Grant

Ohio Christian University (OCU) announced that the Miriam Ruggles Adkins
Foundation of Pickaway County has awarded OCU a grant in order to support the
concert activities of the university. Over the past six years, the OCU Music
Department has actively endeavored to contribute to the musical culture of
Pickaway County by hosting free concerts with musical artists from around the
state and the nation. “We are so excited and grateful that the Miriam
Ruggles Adkins Foundation has made this gesture of support for our efforts to
bring great music and musicians to Pickaway County,” said OCU

Ohio Christian University music department faculty member Mary Jane Dean has
been working with Berger Health Systems administrators Cathy VanHorn and Pat
Hughey to launch a new, volunteer music therapy program at Berger called
“Sounds to Soothe the Soul.” Current student volunteers from Ohio
Christian University, Alyse Copeland (Freshman, Music Education Major) and
Korrin Miller (Sophomore, Worship Arts Major) are participating in the

Matsuda Recital at Ohio Christian University

The Music Department of Ohio Christian University will be hosting a guest
recital this coming Monday night, March 28 at 7:30 in Detty Chapel. Violist
Ken Matsuda (member of the Columbus Symphony) and his wife Tanya will be
presenting a lecture/recital of works for viola and piano by composers from
various countries around the world. Admission to the recital is free.
Community guests are welcome.
