OCU Hosts Kids on Campus and Benefits Teachers Too

Kids on Campus summer camp, hosted at Ohio Christian University (OCU), is fast becoming an institution. Over 280 Pickaway County 1st through 4th graders gather each year in June to learn about art, computers, math, music, and science.  Visit Kids on Campus for pictures of participants’ 2017 experience!

Pickaway HELPS coordinates this summer enrichment program that has grown fifteen-fold in the past decade. Circleville City School Foundation and PPG Industries support this program that delivers hands-on learning in a safe place.

These kids enjoy a really positive experience—their feedback says it all: “I feel like a smart teenager!” “Thanks for teaching me cool stuff!” “It’s fun to see what college kids do!”  Returning students even ask to repeat favorite science experiments. OCU faculty and teacher education graduates lead sessions, assisted by Pickaway high school students.

As OCU Director of Teacher Education, Professor Valerie Jones explains: “We are so pleased that Kids on Campus has grown to become so successful. In addition to hosting this camp, at the same time OCU is offering continuing education graduate courses for all teachers in Pickaway County. And, as a way of thanking the schools for hosting OCU pre-service teacher education students, we give continuing education credit vouchers to the school districts. Their curriculum directors then offer them to any teachers who wish to use the vouchers for their continuing education.”

The camp instruction features a proven hands-on approach that ensures discovery and learning is fun:

Math sessions explore number sense, measurement, geometry, and symmetry through games, puzzles, and art. Students explore place value, geometry, and reasoning.

Science sessions include experiments about life, earth, and space.  They observe weather patterns and discover laws of motion. They learn about energy, solids, liquids, and gases and design and conduct experiments.

Technology students discover personal computers and learn keyboarding, word processing, and Internet safety. They discover Google Docs, the World Wide Web, YouTube, and how to create a website.

Art students learn art forms and produce art with various materials. They paint, draw, design and illustrate, create textures, and experiment with colors, hues, and intensity.

Music students create, read, listen to, and move to music. They sing and play instruments, discover vocal technique, notation, choreography, harmony, and rhythm, and learn tempo, melody, harmony, and expression.

OCU is pleased to host Kids on Campus and provide valuable training for Pickaway County teachers too.
