RICHMOND, IN – With a chance at clinching a spot in the conference tournament, the Ohio Christian University Lady Trailblazers faced nearby rival Indiana University East on Saturday. After defeating the Red Wolves at home earlier in the year, the Lady Trailblazers struggled to keep pace as IU East ran away with a 101-82 win.
The Red Wolves wasted little time sending their message, building an early 12-point advantage in the opening quarter. It was not until the fourth quarter that the Lady Trailblazers outscored the Red Wolves in a 10 minute stretch, which proved to be too late for a full comeback.
IU East's offense benefited from two key lines in the stat sheet, those being points off turnovers and second chance points. The Red Wolves converted 16 OCU turnovers into 19 points, while also converting 20 offensive rebounds into 27 second chance points.
For the Lady Trailblazers, Helaina Limas (SO/Medina, OH) had one of her better games of the season, scoring 27 points on 9-14 shooting. Staci Pertuset (SR/West Union, OH) was held to only 13 points on Saturday, coming up one rebound shy of a double double.
"We struggled today. We gave up way too many second chance points and IU East came ready to play," said Head Coach Brenda Baker. "We struggled to contain their energy and scoring. At this point in the season, it is anyone's game and we must show up every single quarter. We just need to refocus and finish regular season play strong."
Following the loss, Ohio Christian will return home for their final regular season home game of the year when they host Carlow University on Tuesday night. The women's game will tipoff at 5:00 PM followed by the men at 7:00 PM.
