On June 6th 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed on the shores of Normandy to fight Nazi Germany. General Dwight D. Eisenhower described the operation as a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” The bravery and strength shown on this day allowed soldiers to infiltrate Europe and work to combat Adolf Hitler. D-Day commemorates the first day of the Normandy landings and is still honored and remembered 75 years later.
Still the largest seaborne invasion in history, D-Day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices of soldiers and the international alliances that aided the cause. The memory of fallen soldiers was honored on Omaha Beach and other key locations of the invasion. As the years pass and more World War II veterans are lost, their stories are what become their legacy. Each year is a reminder that the efforts of every soldier are to be met with gratitude and recognition.
As a Purple Heart University, Ohio Christian University cares deeply about the sacrifices made by veterans and those who fell in battle. The after effects of D-Day are felt across the country and around the globe in the freedoms afforded America and much of Europe. Thank you is not enough for these soldiers who quite literally changed the world, but from the bottom of our hearts – thank you.
