OCU Welcomes Former Wall Street Journal Editor to Campus image

Ohio Christian University was pleased to welcome Stephen Moore as a guest speaker on Wednesday,March 23, 2016. Moore spoke on the topic of Regaining American Prosperity, offering finical advice and economic commentary to OCU Business & Government students during their distinguished speaker series.

As a former editor for the Wall Street Journal, Moore says that following the publication regularly is a great way to get a grasp on issues of our time. “If you want to be the smartest person in the room, just read the three editorials in the Wall Street Journal.”

According to Moore, the oil and gas industries have carried the U.S. economy over the past 6-7 years.Research from the Federal Reserve Bank shows that America experienced an oil boom in that time period, which was a key factor in bringing America out of the recession.

North Dakota was recently reported to have the lowest unemployment rate; Moore credits this to jobs in the oil and gas industries. By using the two main methods of extracting oil (fracking and horizontal drilling) Moore believes that America will move from being oil import country to oil export within 4 years.

Because of this, energy costs are plummeting. “Every penny [on the price of gas] down is a billion in consumer hands.”

Moore also addressed concerns in regards to global warming, saying, “USA has lowered out carbon footprint the most because we are using natural gas. It’s a wonderful: Cheap, abundant, made in America and clean burning! We’re cleaning up the environment!” He also advised against other energy sources, saying, “Renewable energy is not a realistic alternative right now.”

Moore is an economic writer and policy analyst. In addition to being a former member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, he founded and served as president of the Club for Growth from 1999 to 2004.He is currently Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Project for Economic Growth, at The Heritage Foundation.
