In her recently submitted paper, "A Tour of the Common Core," Annie enthusiastically quotes Valerie L. Wilson, Ph.D., OCU's Teacher Education Department Chair, "’Ohio Christian University has had a constructivist view on our teacher education program even before our accreditation. We believe in hands-on approaches to learning.’"
She goes on to give an example, "In the Math Theory class at Ohio Christian University, taught by Professor Diltz, the students are actively learning hands-on methods to teach the new standards. She has provided the students with materials to remind them of key math concepts and additionally teaches them how to write lesson plans based upon the standards. This class and many more at Ohio Christian University are preparing effective teachers for their future. If every University prepares their teacher education students like Ohio Christian University, we will have effective schools in every district."

Summer Institute Courses

This summer, Ohio Christian University is offering summer courses that will
help K-12 and undergraduate instructors work towards a graduate degree. The
institute gives instructors the opportunity to earn degrees and gain
knowledge in a shorter period of time.
Each course lasts for six weeks and counts as three credit hours. There will
be two separate six-week terms throughout the summer. The cost of these
graduate level classes is $990 per course. There is a simple application and
approval process for the program.

OCU Kappa Delta Pi Chapter Inducts 28 New Members

CIRCLEVILLE, OHIO—Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society
in Education, is pleased to announce that 28 preservice educators have been
invited and inducted into its membership through the Alpha Iota Sigma Chapter
of Ohio Christian University.
The initiation ceremony took place on April 9, 2019 at The Ministry and
Performing Arts Center. The ceremony opened with Dr. Hank Kelly, Provost at
Ohio Christian University, giving the welcome and prayer. Dr. Ann Shelly, of
Kappa Delta Pi, installed the new members, the Alpha Iota Sigma Chapter and

in Tim Tebow Foundation’s Night to Shine in Circleville Vineyard Church in
February. The event gave opportunities to show love and support to those
with disabilities.
Night to Shine is a prom where everyone can participate, delivering fun,
dancing, music, food, and normalcy. Created to embrace those with
exceptionalities so that they feel loved and special, the event enables
participants to show kindness in the spirit of Christian faith.

In 2018, OCU’s Teacher Education Department is participating in classroom
management skills training that addresses student development deficits.
Focusing on issues that impact learning, such as effects of divorce, poverty,
and substance abuse, requires equipping teachers with proven intervention
skills.
To enable Teacher Education majors to succeed in this challenge, OCU is
hosting a training workshop on trauma-informed care led by Pickaway County
Board of Disabilities on June 4th and 5th. Mandated by the State of Ohio,
this practicum is offered for any teacher in Ohio at no cost

On Thursday November 2, 2017, many of our Middle Childhood Education majors
attended the Ohio Middle Level Association Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The
annual conference is held for Ohio teachers of grades 4-9. Ohio Christian
University Professor of Social Studies and Language Arts Methods, Jayne
Stevenson, and Professor of Science and Math Methods, Rolanda Hurtt,
organized and invited their students to attend the conference as pre-service
educators for networking and learning more about this always changing, and

As the tragic effects of opioid addiction continue to grip the nation, in
Ohio efforts to address them are well underway through initiatives by
organizations such as Propel Ohio and Ohio Christian University.
On Nov. 17, Teacher Education Professors Valerie Jones and Angela Flowers,
along with student majors Maddy McCain and Emily Morton, attended Propel
Ohio’s Collegiate Leadership Conference on the effect of poverty and the
opioid crisis on Ohio youth. They joined some 600 attendees in the
