A day before the majority of students were set to return, Ohio Christian University held a commissioning ceremony for students serving in leadership roles this semester. The event was meant to build unity among student leaders and prepare them to face challenges as a team.
Director of Student Engagement Eric Fehr said, “It’s really important that our student leaders think of themselves as on a larger team with larger over-arching goals than just being an RA or on the Student Involvement Council [SIC] team. It is our hope that as various student leaders face challenges and difficulties this year, they will be more willing to reach out to others.”
Dr. Jon Kulaga addressed the group of over 30 students from SIC, Residence Life, and Spiritual Formation on the importance of seeking refuge in Christ. He referenced Psalm 11 to remind them that they first need to be secure in order to be effective leaders and serve those who are hurting.
“The definition of an insecure person is someone who has their security in anything that can be taken away from you,” Kulaga said. “If your identity is in anything other than the Lord, you’re an insecure person.”
He further assured the students the Lord is on His throne and times of hardship do not mean God has abandoned them. In fact, God often test those in leadership to develop them for his future plans.
Kulaga ended his address with this final encouragement to the young leaders: “Ultimately, if God is in control, that means you’re not. We have a God and you’re not Him. So, relax and take refuge in Him.”
