Faculty Profile: Dr. Jeanne R. Bruce Joins Teacher Education Department image

Dr. Jeanne R. Bruce, who recently joined Ohio Christian University’s Teacher Education Department, creates positive environments where students thrive and succeed. Experienced in applying strategies for success in teaching, she is well-versed in classroom management, online instruction, and student support.

Recognized for her communication and relationship-building skills, Professor Bruce teaches a spectrum of courses, including Educational Psychology, Math Methods, Cultures of Children, Instructional Strategies for Adolescents and Young Adults, Fundamentals of Communication, and Teaching the Exceptional Child. She also advises and instructs students on careers in teaching and observes student teachers in their field placements. Bruce specializes in educating pre-teachers on how to implement intervention strategies that benefit students with learning disabilities in the general and special education classroom.

Dr. Bruce earned her doctorate in Administration and Supervision at Tennessee State University, an Education Specialist degree in Instructional Leadership and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a K-12 Special Education Teaching Certification at Tennessee Technological University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication and Romance Languages at Olivet Nazarene University.

Bruce’s background includes directing discipleship ministries for a United Methodist church, instructing online and face-to-face graduate education courses at faith-based universities, being a Special Education teacher, directing marketing and public relations for a hospital, writing newspaper features and editorials, and providing administrative support for a law firm and a manufacturing company.

“The first time I stepped into a college classroom, I realized that teaching this age group is my passion. When I saw the opportunity to teach full-time at OCU, I applied, because I have the Intervention Specialist and hands-on experience that the University needs for its rapidly growing Teacher Education Program,” explains Bruce. “Teaching is my calling and, because I’ve gained specialized training to help students with disabilities, I can share that knowledge with pre-teachers so they, too, can be successful in the classroom with students who struggle; they can make a difference in the lives of those children and their families.

“When teachers are prepared and trained to work with students with learning disabilities in the general education classroom, they will better serve their school, district, and community. My dissertation research indicated that the more teachers feel prepared for these challenges in the classroom, the more positively they feel about having these students in their classroom. Providing the training our OCU students need to be effective in meeting such challenges in their college careers will result in greater success as teachers in the future, not only for them but for their students for years to come.”

In February, at Capital University’s Gateway Conference, Dr. Valerie Jones, Director of Teacher Education at OCU, and Dr. Jeanne Bruce are presenting a case study on intervention for at-risk college students.
