Volunteers pitch in for Community Action Day

Nearly 500 students, faculty and administrators from Ohio Christian University, along with students from Logan Elm High School, volunteered their time Thursday for the annual Ralph C. Starkey Community Action Day, organized by OCU.

"As a university, we're delighted to provide this service for local residents, parks, churches, nursing homes, cemeteries and other sites around Pickaway county," said Dr. Rick Christman, Vice President for Student Development and Athletics at OCU. "We're looking forward to a lot more years of doing this project."

The volunteers started in the morning and kept busy through the day doing various jobs as cleaning windows, clearing out gutters, raking, weeding and painting.

At the Williamsport Community Square, volunteers kept busy painting a swing set that hadn't been painted in years and mopping the floor in the gym.

"It's been wonderful," said Beverly Whitten, a member of the Wil-Deer Recreation Board. "This is great!"

Three siblings who attend Ohio Christian University, Jael Beers, 21, and her brothers, Jerome Beers, 19, and Josiash Beers, 23, helped clean up the Christian cemetery in Williamsport.
