Concentration

Objective

On completion of the concentration, students should be able to:
  •  
    Demonstrate an intermediate-level competency in at least one biblical language, which will prepare them to fulfill a language requirement of seminary degree.
  •  
    Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the Bible, an understanding of Wesleyan doctrine, and competency in using exegetical skills requisite for leading a congregation and life-learning.

NEW TESTAMENT AND OLD TESTAMENT LANGUAGES12 HOURS

Choose 12 hours from the following courses:

    Fundamentals of inflection and basic syntax of Koine Greek, including development of a working vocabulary and the translation of selected portions of the Greek New Testament.
    Offered: Fall, even semester Prerequisite: None
  •  
    Continued study of the fundamentals of inflection and basic syntax of Koine Greek, with development of a working vocabulary and the translation of selected portions of the Greek New Testament.
    Offered: Spring, odd semester Prerequisite: FL203
  •  
    Hebrew alphabet, vowels, morphology, and grammar, beginning vocabulary and basic translation.
    Offered: Fall, even semester Prerequisite: None
  •  
    Syntax and lexical work, vocabulary development, and morphology essential to translation. Inductive analysis in key portions of the Hebrew Old Testament with focus on grammatical and syntactical forms.

  •  
    Mastery of the basic principles of syntax. Passages of the New Testament are selected for exegetical study.

    A continuation of NT411, introducing components of Greek exegesis such as redaction criticism, synoptic criticism, textual criticism and literary criticism.

    Introduction to exegetical method and the use of primary exegetical tools, including word studies, textual criticism, figures of speech, and development of syntax, with exegetical analysis of poetic and historical literature from the Hebrew Old Testament.

    Development of exegetical method, including genre analysis, facility with advanced tools, biblical theology, hermeneutical issues, and communication, to reclaim skillful use of biblical Hebrew for the church.
