OCU Sweeps Johnson University to Claim Regional Baseball Title
KNOXVILLE, TN - The OCU Baseball Team snapped an eleven game losing streak on Friday afternoon and the timing could not have been any better. Despite dropping eleven straight games to some of the toughest NAIA and NCAA competition on their schedule, the Blazers were able to get out of their rut in a hurry.
The Trailblazer offense showed up big in the first game of the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament at Johnson University. OCU rallied to a 10-0 victory over host Johnson University in the best of three games tournament.
Cory Haner stole the spotlight in game one as the freshman launched a three run home run for the Blazers in the win. He finished 2 for 2 with 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
Richie French was stellar on the mound as the OCU hurler tossed a complete game shutout in game one, striking out 7 Johnson batters.
In game two, OCU took a 4-0 lead before Johnson rallied for three runs late to steal the momentum. Heading into the top of the 7th, OCU clung to a 4-3 lead.
With his team leading by only one on the road, Avery Sneed put the game away with a thrilling solo home run to give the Blazers a two run cushion and a 5-3 lead.
Nate Wheeler tossed 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out 7 batters.
Trevor Whitesed was 3 for 3 from the plate with 3 runs scored. Freshman Evan Werner was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Tyler Jones and the OCU defense put the game away in the bottom of the inning, slamming the door on any hopes of a Johnson comeback. Jones picked up the save.
OCU will now prepare to compete in the 2013 NCCAA World Series at Prasco Park in Cincinnati. The World Series will run from from May 7th to May 11th.
