Men's Basketball Wins 2013 NCCAA National Championship 73-62 over Arlington Baptist
SPRINGFIELD, MO- Ohio Christian University won their first ever NCCAA National Championship on Saturday evening with a thrilling 73-62 victory over 7th seeded Arlington Baptist University. The win caps off a perfect season for the Trailblazers against NCCAA competition as OCU went 22-0 against teams in their division on the year.
OCU took an early 10 point lead on ABU but a 6-0 run by the Patriots closed the gap at the ten minute mark. Arlington Baptist stayed close and hit a three point basket with 30 seconds remaining in the first half to take the lead and head into halftime with a one point advantage at 38-37.
The Ohio Christian defense flexed their muscle in the second half, limiting Arlington Baptist to 10 of 34 shooting from the field for 29.4%. OCU would hold the high octane Patriot offense to a meager 24 points in the half. A slam dunk by James Nelson with one minute remaining gave the Trailblazers a twelve point cushion, putting the game out of reach. The OCU defense would shut down ABU in the final two minutes, slamming the door on ABU and allowing OCU to lay claim to the 2013 NCCAA Championship.
Trey Vaughan led all scorers with a game high 24 points on 6 of 11 shooting from three point range. Freshman Evin Bartlett had a big impact with 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field to go along with 4 assists. Wesley Russell tallied 8 points and a game high 9 assists in the win. James Nelson added 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots.
The OCU bench and overall depth played a big factor as the OCU reserves outscored the Arlington reserves 21-11.
Wesley Russell was named Most Outstanding Player for the tournament while also garnishing All-Tournament Team MVP honors. Trey Vaughan was selected as All-Tournament Team.
